Chapter Twenty-Nine

Icocked my head and listened as Max and Felix approached. “We are going to need every advantage we can get,” Felix started to say. “Max has already learned the fae languages. Ithelus, you said you had a shortcut for the Ithelusia.”

“I’ve told you Felix, to call me Rebecca, you call Max by his name.” I crossed my arms and scowled at the male.

“Rebecca,” Felix said begrudgingly.

Kaval coughed, I thought to hide a snigger. “Yes, but we need a fae strong in water magic. I’m hoping one of the dark fae has the gift, most of my warriors are earth or air proficient.”

“Hi,” a small dark fae female stepped out from behind Max.

I smiled at her. “Let me guess, Silene told you that you’d be needed at this precise moment and you have water magic?” My eyebrow rose with the question.

The petite female nodded, she had curly black hair and was shorter in stature than most of the fae I had met so far. “My name is Celeste.”

“Hi Celeste, I’m Rebecca. I don’t think we’ve had much of a chance to talk since you joined our group.” I gave her a reassuring smile.

Celeste shook her head. “No, not really,” she mumbled. “I can help though, if you’d let me have the honor.”

“I would appreciate it,” I said, giving her a reassuring smile. I turned once more to look at the castle and the kingdom of small houses among the trees. In a few hours we would be down there, I hoped that I could make a good impression. I turned to find Kaval instructing Celeste and her nodding as he spoke. When they had finished, Kaval turned to me and held out his hand.

“Are you ready? This isn’t going to be pleasant,” she warned.

I nodded, grimacing but taking his hand. “What do I need to do?”

“Relax and open yourself to Kaval’s mind,” Celeste said. She touched my brow with one hand and Kaval’s with the other.

At first, I didn’t feel any different, but after a few minutes, a light pressure, at the point in my brow she touched, started to build. Sweat started to crawl down my spine and after a few moments, my body started to tremble. It wasn’t a lancing or sudden pain. As the pressure built, creating a stretching sensation in my mind, I clenched my teeth together, trying not to think of the discomfort and gripped Kaval’s hand tighter.

It reminded me of when I’d been cramming for exams, my brain so full of information that I thought it would explode if I studied anymore. But this was more extreme. There was no relief as my mind expanded, pushing within me, and forcing information that should have been learned over time into my cranium.

My body bowed and I started to pant, the pressure increasing even more. It was unrelenting and I wasn’t sure when I’d shut my eyes, but I now squeezed them tightly.

I thought I could hear someone calling my name, but it was distant. A buzzing sensation in my ears rather than actual words.
